How
To Accept Credit Cards On My Website?
It's
been a long time coming. I know. But here it is. Now, to answer this
question, it's going to require some input from you actually. You see, I
can't peer into your business world. However, I can predict where you
need to start, based on what your current situation is financially. So,
let me give you two options.
Option
#1. If you are a work at home
business, with zero monthly sales currently. Also, if you really
anticipate working part-time and have no idea if you are going to sell
$500 worth of anything, I would encourage you to use a third-party
payment processing service like Paypal.com
Here's
why. There are no monthly statement or service fees. You will pay
relatively the same rate as something I would offer, about 2.5%, plus
$0.30 cents a transaction. And there are no monthly minimums required.
So, you don't have to sell $1000.00 worth of anything, to generate $25
in fees.
Review:
Zero
monthly fees
Fair
per transaction fees
No
monthly minimums
How
you accept credit cards on your website is by creating the price and
description of your product in Paypal first. They then will generate a
web page link for you, that you can paste into your web page. When
someone clicks on the link, they get redirected to the Paypal payment
page where they enter the credit card payment information. You can then,
optionally, enter where you want your customer to be redirected to after
they complete the payment.
That's
how it's done. It's pretty simple and cheap.
Scenarios:
This
works great for all types of products you usually sell on Ebay. Or you
can sell digital products that are delivered electronically. Like
ebooks, audio recordings, videos. Tangible products are automatically
tagged with the proper sales tax and alternatively customers can opt to
pay with a credit card, without having to sign up for Paypal.
Allowing
customers to pay online is good for products that do not need as much
personal contact. Now although it's true the high priced products
require more explanation and get sold faster if there is a personal
contact, it's not always required.
Option
#2. If you have a business that
expects to have more than $2,000.00 a month in online sales, you can
benefit from establishing a standard merchant account. You will be able
to lower the per transaction fees closer to 2.0%.
In
this case, the minimum of $25 in processing fees is not an issue or
concern for you. Because your business will likely always generate more
than $25 in fees anyway. It's not important to worry about the monthly
minimum. Now, if you sell beads from home and are lucky to sell $100
worth, then no, I don't recommend this option. It will cost you more
money than it's worth at this point.
Your
big savings happens by lowering the processing percentage rate. Because,
if you think about it. The monthly costs could be $1,68 to process
credit cards potentially, if you are making $10,000 in credit card
sales. The more volume you have, the more your business pays to process
credit cards. The fees are based on a percentage of the sale to cover
the risk involved.
How
to accept credit cards on your website is by contacting your web
designer and having them connect a shopping cart to the gateway. Don't
worry, this isn't something you need to become an expert on. The only
missing piece that you will acquire will be the merchant account. Once
you get the merchant account information, they tell the system what the
info is and instantly, you now have an online credit card payment system
working.
Again,
you justify
the cost of a merchant account and the added extra services if the
monthly volume will be $2,000.00 or more. In addition, controlling the
sales process the entire way is how you gain
100% confidence that you've
made the right decision to get a merchant account.
There
are certain tricks that you webmaster should know about too. These
system flags will notify your site why someone cancelled the sale or
will automatically pop up a box to make the sale even more attractive to
the visitor. Thereby, the customer gets an offer they can't refuse and
ends up completing the sale. Cha-ching! You've made money.
You
can't get this type of control by using a standard Paypal account. It
just won't happen.
This
is why having your own merchant account and controlling every part of
the payment process gives you more power than Paypal. Potentially.
Again, you've got to have a pretty cool webmaster that knows about this
stuff.
I
know it, but then again, I've been around this stuff since ancient
times, 1994.
If
you're online customer starts getting buyers remorse, a highly optimized
system catches the customer before they completely leave and reminds
them what the benefits are. Or it displays a stronger offer to reel in
the customer.
However,
it does not make financial sense to invest so much money into a merchant
account, if the sales costs outweigh the profit potential.
That's the
smart way to do it.
